My Skincare Essentials

One of my biggest frustrations in life is my skin. Ever since 6th grade I have always had acne prone, oily skin. In 9th grade, after trying countless cleansers and antibiotics,  I decided to go on Isotretinoin.

Isotretinoin, most commonly know as Accutane, improved my skin immensely. However, around 6 months after using it, my skin started to break out again. The break outs were small but still made me feel self-conscious. Since then, I have devoted my time to finding a skincare routine that makes me feel confident in the appearance of my skin.

Remove Makeup

The most important step in your skincare routine should be removing your makeup. I cannot stress this enough. I prefer using the Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Cleanser because it removes everything, including waterproof mascara, without irritating my skin. If I'm feeling a little lazy, I will use makeup wipes. I have found that the Simple brand is the best and relatively cheap.

Keep Acne At Bay

If I'm not wearing makeup, I will cleanse my face with the Kiehl's Blue Herbal Cleanser. The biggest problem I have with acne face washes is that they can be very drying to the skin. This one is gentle enough that it isn't drying, but powerful enough that it keeps my acne at bay. Also, a little goes a long way which is very nice for my bank account!

Facial Toners

Toning has always been a step that confused me, until I started actually using a toner. Toners close your pores after washing your face. This one specifically from Kiehl's hydrates my skin and locks in moisture. To apply it, I recommend using a cotton round.

Serums

In my opinion, you are never too young to start caring about the texture and life of your skin. I love this serum in particular because it makes my skin feel hydrated and smooth.

Facial Oils

I know what you're thinking, oils on my already oily face?? I know, the idea still baffles me too, but trust me facial oils will change your life. Facial Oils add the necessary amount of moisture to your face without clogging your pores. At night, I love the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery oil for calming my skin. It also smells like lavender so you feel like you are at a spa. In the morning, I use the Daily Reviving oil to protect my skin from any harmful exposure it might receive throughout the day.

Moisturize

Moisturizing is so important because it balances the oil production in the skin. Without adding moisture back in, your skin will continue to produce unwanted oils. My favorite moisturizer of all time is the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream. If I'm being honest, this is my 4th jar. I love it so much!

Also, it's important to protect your under eyes from aging. Try patting a thick eye cream under your eyes in a circular motion to reduce puffiness.

SPF

Ever since I can remember, my mother has always told me to wear sunscreen on my face. So now I am here telling you the most important tip of all: WEAR SPF! Even if its cloudy or snowing, you'll thank me in 20 years. This one from Kiehl's is perfect for under your makeup or on its own because it is very thin and dries to a semi-matte finish. As you can see, mine is very well loved because I take it everywhere.

To conclude, don't stress too much over your skin. If you break out, you're only human. Try taking a couple days out of the week and have a "No Makeup Day" to let your skin take a breather. Don't be afraid of people judging you for having imperfections on your face because everyone has/had acne or insecurities at some point in their life. I hope these tips helped you to feel confident in the skin you're in!
